Why choose WordPress for your business site?
Nowadays when it comes to designing a website you have a range of options to pick from. However with so many content management systems to choose from, it’s hard to know which is the right one to help you create your business website, and most importantly, support your business as it grows. We’ve been developing websites for over 15 years now and for almost 15 years of that, we’ve been using WordPress. So why should you choose it over Joomla and Drupal?
It is the internet‘s most used Content Management provider.
Did you know that WordPress powers 27% of websites? This makes it the internet‘s most popular content management system (CMS) with somewhere between 50% and 60% of all of all websites that utilise a CMS being powered by WordPress. This figure is only increasing as well. WordPress currently has a 59.3% market share of Content Management systems, compared to 6.2% for Joomla and 4.9% for Drupal, it’s closest competitors.
One of the reasons WordPress is so popular is because it is open source. This means anyone can develop a theme or a plugin and contribute it to the WordPress community for easy download. This is important because it means it is incredibly easy to find a theme or a plugin that someone else has developed to cater to your site’s needs. Whether it be a new feature to communicate with your site’s visitors better or to sell a product, there is no need for you to spend hours writing code. Because WordPress is open sourced it means you can easily update your site to stay on top of any updates as well. An example of this is changes made by Google to mobile site optimisation in the past couple years. Sites not optimised for mobile browsing would risk losing high placements for mobile searches but thankfully there are plenty of plugins available to streamline the process.
Being open source also offers many advantages when it comes to technical support too. Any urgent or crippling issue your site may encounter has almost certainly been taken care of with a fix that can be easily installed, usually in the shape of a plugin. An example of this is an issue encountered with the WordPress Heartbeat API that was introduced in WordPress 3.6. The Heartbeat API allows WordPress to communicate between the web-browser and the server and allows for improved user session management, revision tracking and auto-saving. While this sounds awesome it can send excessive requests to admin-ajax.php which can lead to high CPU usage. Anytime a web-browser is left open on a page using the Heartbeat API, this can potentially be an issue.
Thankfully there was a fix to the issue. Installing the community made Heartbeat Control Plugin via your WordPress dashboard allows you to override how often the Heartbeat API makes a request and you can also customise the Heartbeat frequency rate and tailor it to be active on specific pages, thus ending the problem of endless server requests and high CPU usage. What’s notable is that this fix was available very quickly once the problem had been identified, as developers can upload their solution for download, as opposed to having to wait months for an update.
WordPress boasts over 2000 more free themes than its two closest competitors, Joomla and Drupal, and approximately 10,000 in total. While these sites still offer an extensive library of themes, WordPress offers a larger and more unique variety to pick due to its open-sourced nature. You can also have custom themes designed as well for a clean and professional looking site. There is no need for spending large amounts of money on web design costs, with WordPress themes it is all done for you.

A great example of some of the plugins available to you via WordPress is the free Woocommerce plugin. Woocommerce integrates seamlessly into your WordPress site and allows you to sell anything, physical or digitally, and also offers options for shapes, sizes, product variations and multiple configurations. Woocommerce powers 30% of all online stores because it is easy to install and integrate and offers all the options you would want from a plugin of its kind.
Using WordPress means you will have access to Visual Composer, the number 1 WordPress page builder plugin. With its intuitive front end WordPress editor there is no programming knowledge required to make beautiful pages for your site and with its drag and drop design there has never been an easier way to compile unique layouts. The visual Composer front end editor also allows you to switch between different devices to see how your content looks on mobile devices.
In addition to the front end editor, a back-end editor is also available and has proven to be one of the most used and beloved WordPress plugins of all time. This allows you to instantly view the whole architecture of your site and interact with any content with just a click of the mouse.
Search Engine Optimisation
One of the many reasons WordPress is chosen is due to its ability to manage on-page Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) fairly well straight out of the box. The WordPress installation will allow you to easily manage the basics of SEO for your site without any need for in-depth knowledge. All WordPress themes are optimised for search engines and WordPress makes it incredibly easy to view detailed statistics about your site. There is also a large variety of plugins available to optimise your site for mobile devices too. By far the most popular is WP Touch, with over 6 million downloads. This plugin replaces your site with an elegant looking and content-focused theme that loads fast with easy to read pages for mobile devices. This means your site can maintain high placements from mobile searches.
