So you’ve taken some photos with your digital camera and now you want to publish them on your WordPress site. Instead of having them displayed separately, one by one, which is the default format for inserting images into WordPress, you want them displayed in a gallery with proper rows and columns. So how do you do that? In this article, we will go over how to add an image gallery to your site to ensure your photos look as good as possible.
By creating a gallery you will be able to display multiple images in a grid format, with clickable thumbnails to expand the picture. WordPress actually comes with a built-in gallery feature that many users are not aware of. You can also use WordPress plugins to create even more robust image galleries that look great on all devices and screen sizes, but for this article, we’ll stick to creating a gallery using WordPress itself.
First, you need to edit the page or post where you want to add your image gallery. On the post edit screen click the ‘Add Media’ button displayed at the top. This will bring up the WordPress media uploader where you can click on the ‘add files’ button to upload your images. You will also be able to insert previously uploaded images from this screen as well.
After uploading your selected images, click on the ‘Create Gallery’ option on the left-hand side of the screen.
You will now need to select all the images you want to be inserted into your gallery. Once you have done this the ‘Create a new Gallery’ option at the bottom right of the screen will become active. Click it.
The media uploader will now display your selected images with gallery settings. You can even add captions to each image if you like. From here you can also select how you want the images to be linked, the number of columns and the image size of the gallery.
Once you are done, simply click on the ‘Insert Gallery’ button. This will close the media uploader and your gallery will be displayed in your post. You can now save or publish your post and see your gallery in action.
Now wasn’t that quick and easy? However, if you find yourself uploading images and using the gallery feature frequently you may find it lacks some features such as opening the image within the same page. Your galleries appearance will also depend entirely on the theme of your site too. You also won’t be able to organise your galleries into albums or tag your images.
